The most commonly misdiagnosed musculoskeletal injury around the world is a distal radius fracture, most simply known as a fracture of the radius bone near the wrist. However, AI technology, including Imagen’s OsteoDetect software, significantly enhances diagnostic accuracy. Based on findings from the Swedish Fracture Registry, distal radius fractures constitute the most prevalent type (16.4%). Wrist fractures also rank among the top injuries treated in emergency departments (EDs).

How does OsteoDetect work?

OsteoDetect is a software developed by Imagen that uses “AI to help detect and localize distal radius fractures.” More specifically, it uses deep learning (computers that are taught to process data like a human brain) to identify whether there is a fracture in the radius bone near the wrist and pinpoint the location of the fracture, as seen in Figure 1.

What does the emergency department look like without AI?

During a regular day, the average physician to patients seen ratio in the ED ranges from 1.9 to 4 patients per hour. This means the physician needs to have a conclusive plan ready for the patient in 15-30 min. With the continuous flow of new patients entering the ED, detecting and locating a fracture can become very difficult. As reported in a study, the “main cause of diagnostic error in the ED is the failure to correctly interpret radiographs” which could be likely due to the stressful environment of an ED.

Why is OsteoDetect so important for clinical settings?

With the help of OsteoDetect, misdiagnosis of distal radius fractures can be minimized considerably. Clinicians with different levels of training in certain specialties are now able to provide more help in the ED thanks to the OsteoDetect software. They can swiftly use OsteoDetect for a diagnosis rather than consulting senior physicians or analyzing the radiograph themselves. All in all, this reduces stress, pinpoints suspected fractures, and lets clinicians focus on more patients without rushing.

FDA Approval of OsteoDetect

OsteoDetect obtained their Food and Drug Administration (FDA) clearance on May 24 of 2018 becoming the first software device for Radiological Computer Aided Diagnosis/Detection (CAD). Throughout this process, the parent company Imagen submitted 1000 radiographs where the OsteoDetect software independently analyzed and detected the presence of distal radius fractures in comparison to three board certified orthopedic hand surgeons. The results showed that the accuracy of detecting wrist fractures was improved with the use of the software in contrast to unaided detection.

FAQ Section: AI-Powered OsteoDetect

What is a distal radius fracture?

A distal radius fracture is a break near the wrist in the radius bone. It’s the most commonly misdiagnosed musculoskeletal injury globally.

How does OsteoDetect improve fracture diagnosis?

OsteoDetect uses AI to detect and locate distal radius fractures. It processes data like a human brain to identify fractures and pinpoint their location.

Why is AI important in emergency departments?

AI helps reduce diagnostic errors in the emergency departments by accurately interpreting radiographs. It assists physicians in quickly diagnosing fractures, even in a stressful environment.

How does OsteoDetect benefit clinicians?

OsteoDetect minimizes misdiagnosis of wrist fractures, allowing clinicians to diagnose accurately and efficiently. This reduces stress and enables them to focus on more patients.

What is the significance of OsteoDetect’s FDA approval?

OsteoDetect received FDA clearance on May 24, 2018, as the first software for Radiological Computer Aided Diagnosis/Detection (CAD). It improves diagnostic accuracy for wrist fractures.

What are the key takeaways of using OsteoDetect?

OsteoDetect reduces clinician stress and misdiagnosis rates in the ED. It saves time analyzing radiographs, allowing healthcare professionals to treat more patients effectively.
